SAXONY

Saxony-Anhalt

History and politics

Saxony-Anhalt has a very ancient history, which dates back to the very dawn of the ‘German’ state. Since the rule of the Ottonians in the 10th century, the area has been an important backdrop against which the history of the ‘Empire’ established during that period – the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation – was played out.

The state of Saxony-Anhalt first emerged in its present form between 1947 and 1952. In the aftermath of the Second World War, and as part of the restructuring of the Soviet zone of occupation, it was created as one of five states, and comprised the former Prussian province of Saxony, the state of Anhalt, and a few smaller territories which had previously belonged to Brunswick and Thuringia. The state of Saxony-Anhalt was dissolved once again in the GDR era, with the districts of Halle and Magdeburg taking its place.

Since German reunification in 1990, Saxony-Anhalt has been one of 16 federal states with its own parliament, which is elected every five years by its citizens.

Saxony-Anhalt (săk’sunē-än’hält) [key], Ger. Sachsen-Anhalt, state (1994 pop. 2,965,000), 7,892 sq mi (20,445 sq km), E Germany. Magdeburg is the capital. It is bordered on the east by Brandenburg, on the west by Lower Saxony, and in the south by Thuringia and Saxony. Besides Magdeburg, major cities include Dessau and Halle. The southwest corner of the state is occupied by the Harz Mts. The region is noted for industrial production. It regained its status as a state in 1990, prior to German reunification. Historically the region was a part of the duchy of Saxony until the 12th cent., when it split into several units. Prussia dominated the region after the 17th cent., until Leopold IV of Anhalt-Dessau consolidated the three existing duchies in 1863. In 1871 the area was made a state of the German empire. As constituted in 1947 under Soviet military occupation, Saxony-Anhalt consisted, roughly, of the former state of Anhalt, the former Prussian province of Saxony, and several small territories of the former state of Brunswick. Saxony-Anhalt was abolished as an administrative district in 1952, and its territory was included in the districts of Halle, Magdeburg, Leipzig, and Cottbus.

End of notion and notion today

With resignation of the last duke (deputy by its Oheim) in November 1918 notion had become republican and formed according to realm condition a Free State within the German Reich. A Council of State took over the government authority. To 14.11.1918 Wolfgang Heine (*1861 +1944) became chairmen of the Council of State. On the basis of the new anhaltinischen condition of 18.7.1919 took over to 23.7.1919 Heinrich the Deist (*1874 +1963) affairs of state, now as a president of the Council of State.
1922 stepped the Anhalti Department of State in place of the Council of State. Heinrich Deist was selected to the first Prime Minister von Anhalt. The federal state parliament in Dessau was represented by 36 delegates. These were selected by the population for in each case four years. In the middle of 1924 became Dr. Willy Knorr (*1878 +1937) Prime Minister, before at the end of of 1925 replaced him again Heinrich Deist.
Starting from April 1927 Magdeburg notion becomes William Friedrich RST by (*1883 +1935) gau leaders for the gau.
The federal state parliament of notion was completely dissolved in May 1932. The gau leader of Magdeburg notion is promoted additionally to the realm governor von Braunschweig and Anhalt. After the death of RST by takes over from 1935 to 1937 Joachim Albrecht Eggeling (*1884 +1945) his office. To 20.4.1937 Rudolf Jordan (*1902 +1982) start the follow-up in the office of the gau leader for the gau Magdeburg notion and the realm governorship of Braunschweig and Anhalt. Up to the end of the largeGerman realm to 8.5.1945 it held this function.
William Friedrich RST by
With the developing of the so-called large German of realm finally the form of the Free State notion was terminated. The last duke Joachim Ernst was arrested several times by the national socialists and arrested of 1944 for 3 months in the KZ Dachau. Also Russian crew power was not better and interned the duke after end of the Second World War in the autumn 1945 in the Soviet led NKWD Sonderlager No. 2, the former KZ beech forest. Here he deceased after serious illness to 18.2.1947.
After the war notion on operation of Soviet crew power became into the Prussian province

Dr. Erhard Hübner Saxonia obligation-integrated. (SEE BELOW)
This forced integration became valid by regulation by crew power to 23.7.1945 with reorganisation of a province Saxonia-Anhalt into three governmental districts. As a president Dr. Erhard Hübner became (*1881 +1958) (Hübnerstiftung) assigned. Dr. Hübner became after the elections 1946 Prime Minister of the country Saxonia-Anhalt. As governmental districts Magdeburg, Dessau and Merseburg were specified at that time.
In the year 1947 Saxonia-Anhalt becomes the country Saxonia-Anhalt from the province. 1949 put Dr. Hübner from protest against decisions of the SED its office as
Prime Minister down.
To 25.7.1952 the last meeting of the federal state parliament of Saxonia-Anhalt took place. The country was integrated into the districts Magdeburg and resounds divided, whereby the largest part of notion resounded to the district fell, the region around Zerbst however into the district Magdeburg.
After the turn there was 1990 efforts to animate the Free State notion again. However notion would have had few chances due to its size on economic surviving, so that these attempts were doomed to failure from the beginning. Notion is now a component of the revived Saxonia-Anhalt with the capital Magdeburg and regains here at least its name and is represented also in Landeswappen.

National service flag of the Land of the Federal Republic Saxonia-Anhalt
The fact that notion continues also further still in the hearts of local humans points itself to many name connections with “notion”. There there is e.g. the 1. Football club notion Dessau registered association, the university notion or the Anhalti theatre and as a new name for the former ZAB Sporthalle in Dessau was looked for, decided one for “notion arena”.

Eduard prince von Anhalt is the last genuine male descendant of its house. Wrong princes it gives enough like e.g. Frederic of notion, to married man of Zsa Zsa Gabor, which provides on the contrary to Eduard always times again for headlines, although usually negative.
To 3.12.1941 born prince Eduard von Anhalt 1963 the follow-up of duke Friedrich began as a senior of the total house notion
(Homepage). Since it lost all its properties in Saxonia-Anhalt, it earns itself its living costs as a journalist. He had tried after the turn also briefly in the policy of Saxonia-Anhalt, lives however with Mrs. princess Corinna and 3 daughters meanwhile withdrawn into Bavaria. It engages itself for leukaemia-ill children (president the “German

Prince Eduard von Anhalt
Life bridge registered association “) and has quite still relations too “its” notion. So it is e.g. establishment member of the theatre association Ballenstedt/notion. Also with the Leopoldsfest in Dessau (homepage) it did not have itself taken it to appear with its wife.
An association for “Anhalti regional studies registered association” was created to 28.4.1990 (homepage). Under the presidency of professor Dr. Hermann Seeber it was written on the flags to investigate notion in its historical and cultural unit and retain ideas.
It remains hoping only that the Querelen does not affect itself in such a way around the regional reorganization in Saxonia-Anhalt that notion disappears completely “in sinking”. The former Residenzstadt Dessau is at least circle-free by some farsighted decisions from neighboring places to the union further. Thus and with as circle-border-free a garden realm as possible Dessau Wörlitz remains hoping that notion keeps also in the future its him being entitled meaning.

Willkomen with that

The idea of the liberalism to Saxonia-Anhalt to promote was the goal of a circle of liberal personalities, who united to 1990. As a “society to spreading liberal of ideas registered association” he prepared the establishment of a liberal donation for the country Saxonia-Anhalt. The official establishment took place on 10 July 1993.

With the discussion around the naming one decided for the choice name of a prominent liberal of national politician. Thus the decision for the name “Erhard stroke he donation” fell. Name godfather is a first Prime Minister of the country Saxonia-Anhalt of 1946-1949.

Erhard Hübener was removed 1933 from the national socialists from the government service and withdrew for 1949 from protest against political decisions of the SED from its office as an Prime Minister.

It represented its life long consistently liberal ideas.

This ideal following the donation wants to promote the liberalism to Saxonia-Anhalt. This takes place via meetings and publications. Topics can originate both from the range of the policy and society, as well as from culture and science. It feels particularly obligated – in accordance with the legacy of Erhard Hübener – the topic “Central Germany as future region in Europe”.

Since 2001 a contractual co-operation agreement with the Friedrich Naumann donation gives, both operates since then a common regional office in resounds.

Each year approx. 30-40 meetings of the liberals, political arising formation, are accomplished which both donations answer for together.

  1. I am looking for James (von Anhalt) Birch. My parents Harlan & Verna Glantz were friends of his mother Princess Anna-Luise. James came to Colorado USA one summer in the early 1980’s to stay with our family. My husband and I took James along with several teenagers to a mountain lake to camp. I would like to re-establish contact with James. My email is goodknight56@gmail.com.
    Thank you.
